Polar bears are perfectly adapted to life in the endless ice of the Arctic. They can even swim for very long distances in ice-cold liquid. As well as the grizzly bear, the polar bear is the biggest land- dwelling predatory animal on earth. Weighing in at more than 500 kg and measuring almost 3 m in total, this bear try twice as huge as a Siberian tiger. In an effort to withstand the extreme Arctic cool, polar bears possess a thick layer of fat. They also provide an undercoat as well as a layer of transparent defensive fur. This permits them to hunt and swim in most low temperature. Polar bears are very good swimmers and posses already been sighted as far as 300 km from the coast. They want a highly painful and sensitive sense of smell when trying to find dinners and that can smell activities located 1.5 metres away or buried using a layer of ice one metre dense! Their hearing and vision are comparable with those of the human being. Polar bears are solitary animals but don't have defined territories and enjoy playing with each other. Mating takes place in May and during gestation, the women polar bear nearly triples in weight.
