Newcastle’s Must Sees : August

A hell of a month this August in Newcastle, so I’ll get straight to it. Put down your Pokémon gadgets and start catching these gigs instead.

Gardens @ The Lass O’Gowrie, 10th August

Gardens are a three piece day dream come true. Where ever these guys play you can count on a crowd that gets down to the dirty disco. The soothing psych sounds also erupt the subtle obscure dancing. Making this day dream come true is supporting acts from Alex Martin and the Marquis comin’ straight from the underground (Sydney). Price: Free. Check out the event for times to catch them

El Grande @ The Small Ballroom, 11th August

El Grande is the bluesy rock two piece powered from Kiama (NSW). The boys are embarking on their travels to tour the EP ‘Bobby Blue’. With Newcastle being carefully selected to host a night for the boys, they are also lucky to be supported by the best, Black Lung Cartel and William John Jr, the pure prophets of blues rock in Newcastle.  Price: Free. Foam ‘I Could Milk Myself’ Single Tour @ Hamilton Station, 12th August

The grunge capital (according to these guys) has been generous enough to extend the red carpet outside Perth. FOAM running fiercely through the nation on their release of the new single ‘I Could Milk Myself’ is sending Newcastle into shock. No-Fi Records Presents : Dom Kelly w/ Vacations & Space Cabonara @ The Lass O’Gowrie, 14th August

Newcastle’s No-Fi records looks after the best, and provides the best. So you can bet your bottom dollar that this night will be sublime. Dom Kelly has a whimsical alluring sensation, fused through the spacious melodies. Audie, Joab Eastley, Millie Casey and Maximus are handpicked cherries, fresh from the farm. These talented artist are performing a raw and oh so solo set, filled with laid back energy. Effortlessly fleshing out humble emotion, combined with the ability to leave an audience mesmerized is something these talented artist do too easily. Price: Free. Times yet to be released so keep refreshing the event page 

Kookpunchr Album Launch @ The Hamilton Station, 18th August

Kookpunchr are rising from the depths of tin sheds and circling Newcastle with the release of their new album. The robust rumbles of loud, aggressive guitar staccato will rupture your spleen. But it’s the innate intricacy that heals it. Kookpunchr will be lucky if the stage is standing after the killer support acts; John Howard, Space Boys and Shysters. Price: Free. Luca Brasi w/ Moose Blood / The Hard Aches @ The Cambridge Hotel, 18th August

The Tasmanian locals Luca Brasi are graciously approaching Newcastle’s centre stage at the Small Ballroom. Celebrating their tour ‘If This Is All We’re Going To Be’ invites you to join the antics of punk fuelled and rock ignition. Dappled Cities “That Sound” Launch@ The Small Ballroom, 19th August

Dappled Cities have seen Melbourne and Sydney, and it’s obvious where the tour really begins. You’ve heard them in your radios. You’ve seen them on television. But now it’s about time you drink from the same keg as them. The guys have proudly announced the final line up supporting the show. RAAVE TAPES Winter Wonderland @ ‘Secret’ Warehouse, 20th August

May Newcastle come together to celebrate the birth of our beloved Joab Eastley. His birthday wish this year is to raise enough money to help one of his pre-school students who is battling with leukaemia. A beautiful event for a beautiful cause. The event is a 12 til 12 jam, with live art from local artists, as well as 14 bands from Newcastle to the Gold Coast. If you missed Splendour, then this is the next best (and cheapest) alternative. War On Happiness @ The Commons, 20th August

Newcastle sweethearts have organised a night to celebrate the unique talent of local singer songwriters. The night will cover all sounds and styles and provide carrots and hummus. Live acts from Jason Lowe, Lachlan X. Morris and the Unholy Communion, James Thomson and the Strange Pilgrims, As Of Sky and many more. Price: Gold coin donations Check out the event for more details

Drop Legs VS. William John Jr. @ The Lass O’Gowrie, 24th August

Brace yourself Newcastle. You are about to be washed out by a tsunami of reggae surf hip hop and acid blues rock. Two worlds collide, the masters of heavy reggae Drop Legs, ride the wave to Newy to check in at the Lass en route to Sydney and William John Jr. wraps the blues slide guitar and carefully yields those psychedelic blues you’ll never get your head around.
