Newcastle’s Must Sees: July

Winter is here, and the biggest challenge right now is leaving those sweaty bed socks that you’ve been wearing for four days now.  Seeing as ‘Dry July’ isn’t a thing here in Newcastle, we have gathered a mixed bag of favourites to lure you into the starlight of Newy’s most warming upcoming events. So fill your glass with some mulled wine and put some dry socks on because the scene this month is heated.

WildHoney’s ‘Pull it Together’ Tour @ The Lass O’Gowrie Hotel, 1st July

WildHoney are making a dent in our radios with their new single Pull It Together and have decided to do the same to our beloved Lass stage. I encourage you all to manoeuvre from your fireplace on Friday and allow the electric melodies to warm you up. As Triple J’s host Linda Marigliano claims “what nicer way to have someone telling you to stop moping and pull yourself together”. LeisureLife Records Presents: Toisoc x In Caves x Rugged Coast EP Release Tour @ The Small Ballroom, 1st July

Toisoc, In Caves and Rugged Coast have endured a lot through the tour, and Newcastle is yet to come. The adventures of the bands have been one big tournament preparing for you. Helping to spark the fire are Newcastle’s talented underground artists, Space Cabonara, Jimmy Davis and Family Dog. Definitely a night packed tighter than a nightclub’s smoking area, so check it out! Wasted Wanderers @ Stag & Hunter Hotel, 2nd July

Wasted Wanderers is a three piece bluesy rock formation from Adelaide. The trio are touring their catchy new single In Your Fire to embark on their first national tour. The sounds reflect modern blues with an in-depth musical texture, infusing soul and dance. Adeline Pines ‘Life of Wires’ EP Launch @ The Lass O’Gowrie, 2nd July

Adeline Pines have been working towards establishing their long awaited debut, Life Of Wires. The album arches through genres of electric mix of alternate country with a tinge of modern punk layering. Joining the party will be the Bears in Caves, Bofolk Ballico and Lachlan X Morris. Come along to celebrate this exciting achievement for the band. Price: Free

The Australian Beefweek Show @ Carrington Bowling Club, 2nd July

The Carro Bowlo is putting on a bit of a party in celebration of the end of the longest election campaign. The locals will be enjoying the cult classic film Don’s Party on the big screen, whilst the election plays on another TV, in mute. Stick around for the big party throw down by The Australian Beefweek, Newcastle’s punk oddities. Supporting these guys is independent artist Lachlan X Morris, a Wilco inspired sound. ColourSound Presents the Newcastle Subsonic Music Festival @ The Cambridge Hotel, 2nd July

The festival delivers the fundamentals of house and techno roots. Subsonic erupts an appreciation towards the rhythmic eclecticism of acid house and many more. The sounds are laced with the DJ’s articulate rhythmic tapestry. The head spinning 9pm-3am festival includes decks from DJ MSG, Tomek, Tom Massey, Azza Thomas, Surian, Pink Frost and Girl Friday. Pozkah @ The Underground  Tuesday 5th July

This tidy ‘lil jazz band are hitting up the Underground to share some of their new beautifully composed jazz tunes. Original soulful compositions and improvised sets on the sax, guitar, bass and drums by the talented boys. Check it out! PRICE:  $10 student/concession/members – $15 general public.

Boo Seeka @ The Cambridge Hotel, 8th July

Boo Seeka has been experiencing jet lag due to the high demand of concerts all around the globe. And oh my, what a way to end the cycle, coming to us on their newest single tour, Oh My. The Bennies ‘Wisdome Machine’ Tour @ The Small Ballroom, 10th July

The Bennies have graciously filtered through triple j’s Hottest 100, reaching number 88 on the chart. Since then, the band have been leaving cities with traces of psychedelic rock and love for metal punk too. The Wisdom Machine Tour is the Bennies biggest Australian tour and have been partying hard but working harder to fill the air with their music. Hiking alongside the tour are Clowns and AXE Girls. Newcastle’s sweethearts Raave Tapes are also sharing the stage and the dancefloor, packing the venue out like sardines. The Longnecks @ The Hamilton Station, 14th July

Newcastle locals are hosting a damn good night at the Hamo! The Longnecks are self-described as “sad but fun indie punk band”. Bringing a psychedelic punk vibe is Zappo, the only band that takes you on a trip without leaving your spot. Southern End and Eleven Eleven are also bringing the beats in to light up this joint! dave EP Launch @ The Lass O’Gowrie Hotel, 15th July

dave is on the road again! Luckily you can catch them for their Poor Kelpie EP launch at the Lass. Be sure to bring along a mouth guard and a solid helmet in preparation for the mosh; these guys are exhilarating and scary. The Owls are not dead, they have just been sleeping, The Lass O’Gowrie, 22 July

It’s been a while since we’ve had the company of The Owls, but that’s only because they’ve been hiding away working on some top stuff. The modest musicians are incredibly talented and deserve to have the Lass packed celebrating their return.
